Tampa Bay Rays Designate Veteran Backup Catcher Alex Jackson for Assignment
Rays Trim Roster to 26 After Deadline Deal
The Tampa Bay Rays have designated veteran backup catcher Alex Jackson for assignment, the team announced Tuesday. The move comes after the Rays acquired catcher Christian Bethancourt from the Oakland Athletics at the trade deadline.
Jackson's Time in Tampa Bay
Jackson, 27, joined the Rays in 2021 and has served as the team's backup catcher behind Mike Zunino. He has appeared in 45 games over the past two seasons, batting .194 with one home run and eight RBIs.
While Jackson has provided solid defense, his offensive production has been limited. The Rays are hoping that Bethancourt, who is known for his strong defensive skills and ability to handle a pitching staff, will be an upgrade offensively.
Rays Roster Implications
The Rays now have 13 pitchers and 13 position players on their active roster. The team could opt to keep a third catcher on the roster, but it is more likely that Jackson will be claimed by another team or designated for assignment.
If Jackson is claimed by another team, the Rays will receive a compensatory draft pick. If he is designated for assignment and clears waivers, the Rays could outrighted him to Triple-A Durham.
