Representative Sheila Jackson Lee Claims Moon Is a Planet
Misspeak or Lack of Understanding?
Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) has come under fire after she claimed that the moon is a planet and that it is made up of gases.
Lee made the remarks during a speech to students at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston on April 8, 2024. She was speaking about the upcoming solar eclipse, which will be visible in the United States on April 8, 2024.
In a statement released after her speech, Lee said that she had misspoken. She said that she meant to say that the moon is a satellite of the Earth and that it is made up of rock and dust.
However, Lee's previous statements on science have raised questions about her understanding of the subject. In 2011, she claimed that the Earth is only 6,000 years old. She also said that she does not believe in evolution.
Lee's comments have been met with criticism from scientists and educators. They say that her statements are inaccurate and that they could damage public trust in science.
