Rublev's Resurgence Continues in Madrid, Defeats Alcaraz
Impressive Victory Marks Rublev's Eighth Top 3 Win
Alcaraz Suffers First Defeat on Spanish Clay in 25 Matches
Andrey Rublev has continued his impressive mid-season form at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open, rallying from a set down to defeat two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday.
Rublev's victory marks his eighth Top 3 win of his career and his biggest win of the season to date. The Russian has struggled since being defaulted in Dubai in February, but he appears to have emerged from his slump with some stunning performances in Madrid.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, suffered his first defeat on Spanish clay in 25 matches. The Spaniard was bidding for a third straight title at the Madrid Open, but Rublev's resurgent performance proved too much to handle.
